Redmi Note 10 Pro Max does not come with 5G support

The Redmi Note 10 Pro offers impressive features at an attractive price, but it lacks 5G support. 5G phones are expected to be a standard in 2021 with 5G services promising to roll out later this year. Realme has been at the forefront when it comes to launching affordable 5G devices. In the span of three months, the company has launched the Realme X7 and Realme Narzo 30 Pro that offer 5G connectivity starting from as low as Rs 16,999.

The Rs 18,999 Redmi Note 10 Pro Max without 5G support would have been acceptable last year when the expectation of a 5G launch in India was still distant. In 2021, however, consumers purchasing a new long-term device are going to be looking for 5G support. While the Redmi Note 10 Pro and Redmi Note 10 Pro Max offer exceptional hardware and pricing that is unrivaled at the moment, the lack of 5G support may affect sales.

Here’s one Twitter user, just one of many, writing that he is confused about buying the Redmi Note 10 Pro as it comes without 5G, which seems to be a legitimate concern for those looking at purchasing a new device for the next 2-3 years.

Why Redmi Note 10 Pro Max does not come with 5G support in India

In a reply to a Facebook comment, Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain explained why the Redmi Note 10 series does not come with 5G support. He said that the company decided against 5G as services will take a few years to completely roll out in India. “We do have 5G phones. And happy to launch more. However, there is no 5G network in India. Even if the network gets auctioned at the end of this year, it will be easily at least 3-4 years by the time 5G comes to all parts of the country. By that time, you would have changed phones 2-3 times.”

Redmi Note 10 Pro Max lacks 5G, but should that bother you?

Xiaomi feels the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max without 5G should not bother potential buyers right now. The 5G roll out in India is not expected until later this year and even then 5G will be at its infancy in the country. The kind of speeds and low-latency that 5G connectivity promises will only be seen after a couple of years once telecom operators are able to provide widespread coverage. Moreover, 5G recharge packs will be pretty expensive compared to current tariffs, at least initially. All of this is to say that 5G mass adoption in India is still a few years away, by which time consumers will have upgraded from the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max to a 5G-ready Redmi phone.
