Xiaomi sent the Redmi Note 7 to space, here are the photos it captured

“The phone was fitted in a 3D custom-built rig and was launched in the atmosphere to a height of 31km”

The Redmi Note 7 (review) is Xiaomi’s latest budget offering and a very high value-for-money proposition under the Rs 10,000 segment. The series has undergone a big cosmetic makeover with premium materials such as glass, which weren’t on its predecessor. The handset is already selling on retail shelves but Xiaomi’s marketing campaign for the series continues. The latest, after some very popular durability tests, is a launch of the Redmi Note 7 into Earth’s orbit. And no, Xiaomi did not employ a space shuttle for that, instead, it used a custom-built rig with a hot air balloon designed to withstand high altitude and low temperatures.

In fact, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun posted a video yesterday on Weibo documenting the whole process from start to end. Three Xiaomi devices were launched inside the rig frame fitted with the balloon and it rose to a height of around 31km in the atmosphere where the temperature hovered around -60 degrees C. The phone also captured videos and photos of the majestic blue skyline and ozone layer which has also been shared by Xiaomi as can be seen in the images. Well, at least for the record, this is the first Xiaomi Redmi Note series handset to do so.

The Redmi Note 7 recently crossed 1 million in sales and is also now available on open sale, which means buyers don’t have to wait for flash sales to buy it anymore. There’s a base 3GB + 32GB variant priced at Rs 9,999 and a 4GB + 64GB variant priced Rs 11,999. For that, buyers get a 6.3-inch full-HD+ display topped with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, Snapdragon 660 chipset, and a 4,000mAh battery. It competes with the Realme 3 and is an incredible budget offering at the price point.
