Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max in India with the same starting price tag as the Samsung Galaxy M31 (review). Both the handsets’ prices in India start at Rs 14,999. What’s more? The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy M31 have almost similar specifications, including 64MP quad-camera setup on the back, 32MP front camera, and a beefy battery cell, among others. Design and display

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max packs a new-age punch-hole display and Aura Graphic design with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 layer on the back panel as well. The fascia of the phone sports a 6.67-inch IPS display with Full HD+ (1,080 x 2,400 pixels) resolution, 20:9 aspect ratio, and a small cut-out for the selfie camera atop. The handset comes with quad-rear cameras, aligned in a squarish module that juts out of the frame a little. The fingerprint scanner is placed underneath the power button on the right spine alongside volume buttons. All the ports, including USB Type-C, 3.5 headphone jack, and speaker grille, are at the bottom edge of the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max.

The Samsung Galaxy M31, on the other hand, has a conventional waterdrop notch display with L-shaped quad cameras at the top left corner of the rear panel. The handset sports a 6.4-inch AMOLED Infinity-U screen with full-HD+ resolution and small U-shaped cut-out up top for the selfie camera. The phone has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, while the power button and volume rocker on the right spine. The USB Type-C port for charging, 3.5mm audio jack, and speaker grille are all on the bottom edge of the Samsung Galaxy M31.

Performance and software

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max is powered by Qualcomm’s newest 8nm Snapdragon 720G chipset with 2.3GHz clock speed and octa cores. The SoC is paired with up to 8GB RAM and 128GB user-expandable storage using a dedicated microSD card slot. The handset runs Android 10-based MIUI 11 out of the box.

The Samsung Galaxy M31, on the other hand, rocks a year-old Exynos 9611 chipset coupled with up to 6GB RAM and 128GB user-expandable storage. The SoC may not be as powerful as Snapdragon 720G but gets the job done. Software-wise, the Samsung Galaxy M31 boots One UI 2 atop Android 10 out of the box.


The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max handles the photography with a quad-rear camera setup that bears 64MP primary sensor with f/1.89 aperture, Super Stabilization, PDAF, slow-mo, and 4K video recording at 30fps. This is assisted by 8MP ultra-wide sensor with 120-degree field-of-view, 5MP macro lens, and 2MP depth sensor. The phone’s front camera is equipped with a 32MP AI sensor for selfie and video calling.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 also ships with a 64MP quad rear cameras aided by 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 5MP macro lens but the depth sensor has 5MP resolution instead of 2MP. This means that the handset will be able to capture better portrait shots compared to the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. The front camera of the phone gets a 32MP selfie shooter.  

Battery and connectivity options

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max’s entire setup is driven by 5,020mAh battery with 33W fast charging support. In terms of connectivity, the handset features 4G LTE, dual SIM slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS/ GLONASS, VoWiFi, 3.5mm headphone jack, and ISRO’s NavIC geolocation system for accurate real-time positioning and timing services.

The Samsung Galaxy M31, meanwhile, houses a larger, industry-leading 6,000mAh battery with an average 18W fast charging support. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS/ GLONASS, VoWiFi, 3.5mm headphone jack, and USB Type-C port for charging and data sync.

Prices in India

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max price in India starts at Rs 14,999 for the base 6GB RAM + 64GB storage variant. The phone’s 6GB RAM + 128GB and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage options, meanwhile, are priced at Rs 16,999 and Rs 18,999, respectively. The handset will be available in Interstellar Black, Aurora Blue, and Glacier White colour options from March 25th onwards on and

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is also exclusive. It has been priced at Rs 14,999 for 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant, while the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage costs Rs 15,999. The handset comes in Black, Red, and Blue colour variants.
