Mukesh Ambani has resigned as chairman of Reliance Jio. His eldest son Akash Ambani is now the new chairman of Jio Infocomm’s board, the company announced on Tuesday. This move is being viewed as “succession planning” by the 65-year-old billionaire. The board of directors held a meeting on June 27th to announce that they “approved the appointment of Mr. Akash M. Ambani, Non-executive Director as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company.”
That said, Mukesh Ambani will continue to be the chairman of Jio Platforms Ltd, the flagship company that owns all Jio digital services, including Jio Infocomm.
Akash’s appointment as the new chairman of Jio is in recognition of the contributions he has made to the digital service, the company said in a release. Akash has been involved with the creation of the digital ecosystem around Jio 4G in India.
Akash Ambani also worked closely with a team of engineers in creating and launching the Jio Phone back in 2017. He also led the key acquisitions made by Jio in the digital space in the last few years and has been involved with the development of new technologies and capabilities, including AI-ML and blockchain.
“Akash is expected to continue to operate on the cutting-edges of innovation and technology to encourage an ecosystem that will further digital solutioning and make the power of data and technology more accessible to all, including those who are still at the margin.”
