River, a Bengaluru-based EV startup, has launched its first electric scooter called the River Indie and calls it India’s first maxi electric scooter. The electric scooter also claims to deliver a real-world range of 120km on a single charge. The River Indie is a premium offering and competes with the likes of the Ola S1 Pro, Ather 450X and Bajaj Chetak. The River Indie is oriented towards practicality and comes with segment-first features like a crash guard and front set footpegs.

River Indie electric scooter price, availability 

The River Indie electric scooter has been launched in India for an introductory price of Rs 1.25 lakh (ex-showroom Bengaluru). The electric scooter can be preordered via the company’s official portal for a token amount of Rs 1,250. The River Indie electric scooter is being offered in three colour options – Monsoon Blue, Summer Red and Spring Yellow. The company is also offering a five-year warranty or 50,000km on the vehicle and the battery pack. 

Deliveries are expected to begin in August 2023 and are only available in Bengaluru at the moment. River has plans to expand to 50 other Indian cities by 2024. The company also intends to set up a fast-charging network across the country. 

River Indie electric scooter specifications

The River Indie electric scooter uses a Mid-Drive PMSM electric motor with a peak power output of 9hp paired with a 4kWh Lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack is IP67-rated. This powertrain configuration helps the River Indie sprint from zero to 40kmph in 3.9 seconds, up to a top speed of 90kmph. The electric scooter gets three riding modes – Eco, Ride and Rush. The River Indie has a claimed true range of 120km and the battery pack juices up from zero to 80 percent in five hours.

Mechanical components include disc brakes at the front and rear with a combi braking system, 14-inch alloy wheels, telescopic front suspension and coil springs with hydraulic dampers at the rear. The River Indie offers a ground clearance of 165mm.

The River Indie, being a maxi-style scooter, gets 43 litre under-seat storage, a 12-litre lockable glove box, pannier mounts, and 20-inch wide floorboard, front set footpegs, and built-in crash guards. The River Indie also packs in features such as LED lighting with distinctive signature DRLs at the front and back, a USB charger, alloy clip-on handlebars, alloy wheels, a 6-inch monochrome display, fast charging, reverse assist, etc. 

The company is also providing custom accessories such as bolt-on mounts for a smartphone, clip-on panniers with up to 40 litres of storage, a windshield, a detachable floor cage, and a 25-litre all-weather top box.
