“Apart from the four rear cameras, the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) features a 6.3-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED screen and up to 512GB storage”
South Korean handset maker Samsung seems to have got its mojo back as it’s now innovating with features once again. The chaebol recently launched the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) (first impressions) in India, which came in as its first triple camera-toting smartphone. Now, the company has gone ahead and launched the first-ever smartphone with quad cameras – Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) at an event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Let’s talk about the highlight of the smartphone first, the four-camera module on the back with sensors stacked vertically. The primary camera happens to be a 24MP sensor with an aperture size of f/1.7. It is accompanied by a 10MP telephoto sensor with f/2.4 aperture and 2x optical zoom, 8MP ultra-wide angle sensor with f/2.4 aperture and a 120-degree field of view, and a 5MP depth sensor with f/2.2 aperture for bokeh. Notably, this is the same setup as that on the Galaxy A7 (2018) with the additional telephoto sensor thrown in the mix. The camera app comes with usual Samsung features like customisable Live Focus, an AI-based scene optimiser, and AR emojis, among others.
Moving on to the key specifications, Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) ships with 6.3-inch full-HD+ (1,080 x 2,220 pixels) Super AMOLED screen without the notch. The performance of the handset is driven by an octa-core processor whose name has not yet been revealed. The smartphone comes in two variants – 128GB storage + 6GB RAM and 128GB storage + 8GB RAM, with both supporting microSD cards of up to 512GB. In the front is a 24MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture.
In the software department, the handset boots Android Oreo with Samsung’s Experience UI on top. The power requirements of the handset are taken care of by a 3,800mAh battery with fast charging support. For security, you get the usual array of a fingerprint scanner and face unlock. Connectivity options on the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) include dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C, and NFC with Samsung Pay support.
Samsung is offering the Galaxy A9 (2018) in three gradient colours – Caviar Black, Lemonade Blue and Bubblegum Pink. As for the pricing, the handset is said to cost €599 (~ Rs 47,850) in Europe for the base model. It will go on sale in November, though India release plans and price for the smartphone have not been revealed as of now.
