Ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series launch on February 1st, a new report has reaffirmed rumours that the upcoming series, comprising the vanilla Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra, will run on a customised version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

The South Korean tech giant’s flagship smartphones have been divided into two categories for years. The Samsung Galaxy flagship S-series devices in the US are powered by Snapdragon chipsets from Qualcomm. However, in other markets, such as Europe and even India, they have long used Samsung’s own Exynos chips, which is somewhat inferior in performance.

The first public indication that the Samsung Galaxy S23 series was indeed using Snapdragon chips universally this time came from the agreement between Samsung and Qualcomm last year. Since then, additional evidence has emerged, including appearance of the vanilla Galaxy S23 on Geekbench last month, which indicated a modified Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor with a higher clock speed.

According to 9To5Google, the “Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy” is the moniker given to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 device that powers the Samsung Galaxy S23. The report hints that the chip will have a clock speed of up to 3.36GHz. In the main version of the chip from Qualcomm, the primary X3 core runs at 3.2GHz. Earlier, there were rumours that the modified chipset would be produced in Samsung’s own foundry rather than TSMC, but that has been denied by the original source.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Geekbench listing showed the motherboard to be ‘Kalama,’ which probably corresponds to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2 chipset. The clock speed mentioned was 3.36GHz, indicating that it is the overclocked version of the chipset. The listing also revealed that the upcoming smartphone would run on Android 13 OS out of the box. It will be paired with up to 8GB of RAM, but it is possible that there might be a 12GB option as well.

Even as the company is all set to unveil the flagship Galaxy S23 series, pre-booking for the phones has already started. A recent report also revealed leaked Samsung Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra prices.
