Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus users had reported a camera issue earlier this year in March where they would see a fixed blur in photos taken with the 50MP camera. The issue still hasn’t been cleared but Samsung has finally acknowledged it and also assured a software update with a fix for it. It isn’t clear if the issue is widespread but it appears to affect Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus users in Europe.

Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus camera blur issue

Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus users complained of a permanent blur that’s unusually shaped in the form of a banana or ring that appears on photos of documents or anything that has text on it. The blur however started appearing in normal photos as well. This happened with the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus’ 50MP primary camera and the blur isn’t what we usually see when in close-up shots where the background is slightly blurred.

Now, months after the issue was reported, Samsung has finally responded to the issue giving an explanation, and also promising a software update with a fix. Samsung posted this on the company’s Polish community post.

“When testing the camera capabilities of the S23 or S23+, your attention may have been caught by the fact that the area around the subject looks a bit blurry when taking a close-up photo. This is because the rear wide-angle camera on the S23 and S23+ has a bright aperture, which helps when taking photos in the dark. However, this also means that the more noticeable selective focus can make the background of your photos look a bit blurry. Samsung plans to improve this in a future software update,” Samsung said in the community post.

It also suggested some workarounds for the time being and these include taking a photo from a slightly greater distance if your subject is 30cm away. Another option is to take photos vertically and not horizontally or diagonally as this may lead to a more blurry background.

If you have a Galaxy S23 or S23 Plus and you are indeed facing this issue then you can follow the workarounds mentioned above or wait for the software update which Samsung hasn’t given a date for.
