Samsung is working on a Galaxy Smart Tag that is likely to launch alongside the Galaxy S21 series in January next year. The Tile-like smart tracker was recently spotted on an Indonesian certification website a couple of weeks ago. Now, 91mobiles has learned from prolific tipster Ishan Agarwal more details about the upcoming smart tag. Named Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag, the tracker will come in two colour options and will be quite affordable. Little is known about the exact functions and features of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag, but they can be expected to operate similar to Tile trackers, which can be attached to any object – wallets, keys, remotes, earbuds, etc – to keep track using an app.

According to Agarwal, the Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag will be priced EUR 15 (about Rs 1,350), which is pretty close to the retail price of Tile. Samsung will launch the tracker in Black and White colours at the time of launch. No other new details are available presently, but we do know the tracker was listed on Indonesian Telecom Certification agency’s website with model number EL-T5300 and model name Galaxy Smart Tag. It was also spotted on the website of European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) under the name Samsung Smart Tag.
While Tile is the biggest name in the smart tags space, Apple is also reportedly working on a new product named AirTag that can be used to keep track of objects.
Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag will use the company’s recently-announced SmartThings Find technology in order to help users keep track of various objects. SmartThings Find will use Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) and ultra-wideband to send signals to your smartphone from the object with which the Galaxy Smart Tag is linked. It will work offline too as long as the tracker has enough battery to send a signal. We don’t know how much battery life the Samsung tracker will have, but Tile uses a non-rechargeable battery that is rated to last one year. Samsung is presently running a two-month beta test of SmartThings Find in South Korea, the US, and the UK with 6 million people.
It should be noted that Samsung launched a smart tag in 2017 as well, named Connect Tag. This tracker used narrowband technology, GPS, Cell ID, and Wi-Fi-based positioning to give users location-accurate info about the objects they wanted to track. However, it’s applications were different from what the Galaxy Smart Tag is expected to have; these include the user getting a notification when their child enters the backyard or giving accurate info on where their car is parked.
