Possible Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 spotted with Qi 2.1 wireless charging

Highlights
  • Qi 2.1 offloads magnetic charging capability to accessories such as cases and docks.
  • Qi 2.1 incorporates Apple’s MagSafe technology to bring magnetic charging to the original Qi standard.
  • Samsung Galaxy S25 already supports Qi 2.1 wireless charging.

Samsung has started teasing the launch of its upcoming flagship foldable series, particularly the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Alongside it, the clamshell-style foldable called the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 could also launch. And as part of the upgrades, the Z Flip 7 could support Qi 2.1 wireless charging, while the Galaxy Z Flip 6 featured Qi 1.3.3. 91mobiles has spotted the Z Flip 7 on the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the body that certifies wireless chargers and power sources. So, if you want a high-end foldable with this next-generation wireless charging standard, read on to learn more:

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Qi 2.1 certification

  • We have come across the Samsung phone with model number SM-A846U on the Wireless Power Consortium. While the Galaxy Z Flip 7 was recently spotted on India’s BIS certification website with a different model number, SM-F766B.
  • While SM-F766B seems to follow a more familiar pattern found in Samsung’s model nomenclature, the SM-A846U doesn’t follow the usual pattern. However, upon digging into the WPC database, we saw the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has been listed with the SM-A822D model name. So, by that pattern, we figure the SM-A846U is the Galaxy Z Flip 7.
  • Similarly, the Z Fold 7’s potential support of Qi 2.1 wireless charging was spotted the other day by 9to5Google. Meanwhile, both the Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 are compatible with the original Qi standard.

Qi 2.1 benefits: why it matters

Qi2’s support for Android was announced in January at CES 2025. Following this, the Samsung Galaxy S25 came out with Qi 2.1 support.

Here are the benefits of the new standard:

  • Magnetic alignment (MagSafe-like): Qi 2.1 uses a Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which is similar to Apple’s MagSafe. This means the magnets can be placed on the charger or case, instead of the phone’s body. Galaxy S25, for instance, supports ‘Qi2-ready’ magnetic accessory covers from Samsung or third-party brands like Spigen.
  • Faster and more efficient charging: Qi 2.1 supports and Automatic Alignment Profile (AAP) for better coil alignment, reduced power loss and heat generation.
  • Improved safety and temperature control: Less heat means safer charging for long sessions.
  • Cross-brand compatibility: Android and iOS phones supporting Qi2 could use the same charger with consistent performance.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to launch around Rs 1.1 lakh in India, and its Unpacked event could happen in early July. Keep reading for similar leaks, rumours, and discoveries in the meantime.
