“Samsung has designed its Galaxy Z Flip foldable smartphone to make it more compact, slim, and durable”
Samsung unveiled its second-generation foldable smartphone Galaxy Z Flip at its event last night in San Francisco. The handset comes with a major departure in design terms from last year’s Galaxy Fold. For starters, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip folds vertically like a flip phone, instead of horizontally, and features a bendable “Ultra-Thin Glass” display, which Samsung likes to call Infinity Flex display, rather than the plastic screen that we’ve seen in other foldable smartphones. Samsung said at the event the flexible glass “changes everything” and “physics-defying.” Compared to the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip has a smaller form factor, fewer cameras, and more durable design. Excited? Time for you to get up close and personal with the new Galaxy Z Flip.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip price, specifications
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip price has been set at $1,380 (~Rs 98,500) in the US market. The phone will come in Mirror Black, Mirror Purple, and Mirror Gold (in select market) colour options and sales are slated to start from February 14th.
Coming to the specifications, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip sports a clamshell design with ‘Hideaway Hinge’ that allows users to keep the flexible display open at multiple angles. The hinge features ‘sweeper’ tech made out of nylon fibres to keep dirt and dust out of the phone. The handset is rated to survive over 2,00,000 folds and unfolds.
Coming to the specifications, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip sports a flexible 6.7-inch Super AMOLED full-HD+ Infinity Flex primary display and a tiny 1.01-inch Cover Display for notifications. As with the Fold, the handset’s screen doesn’t fold completely and shows a crease in the middle when the device is unfolded. For photography, the phone rocks dual rear cameras with 12MP primary sensor that bears 1.4-micron pixels and f/1.8 aperture and a secondary 123-degree ultra-wide-angle sensor with f/2.2 aperture and 1.12-micron pixel size. The front camera of the phone gets a 10MP selfie shooter for selfies and video calling.
Software-wise, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip boots a customised version of Android 10 with Flex Mode UI that splits the main foldable display into ‘two 4-inch screens’ for multi-tasking, such as watching a YouTube video in the top half while commenting or finding other videos in the bottom half. The phone is powered by Snapdragon 855+ SoC paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage onboard. A 3,300mAh battery with 15W wired fast charging and 9W wireless charging support fuels the handset. Other features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, Samsung Knox, mono speaker, and connectivity options such as 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, USB Type-C, NFC, MST, and GPS (A-GPS).
