Samsung could be working on laptop with extendable, foldable display, new patent suggests

Highlights
  • The patent was filed on 01-06-2020 and was published on 16-07-2024.
  • The laptop will have a usual screen on the front, but there will be two more screens that extend from the right and the left.
  • The new version of the extendable laptop appears to have curved edges.

After foldable phones, Samsung appears to be working on an extendable/foldable laptop, as per the patent listing on WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) spotted by 91mobiles. This shows a normal laptop with a screen on the front and a keyboard but what makes this special is the extendable screen that expands like a wrap.

Samsung files patent for extendable laptop screen

  • The patent was filed way back on 01-06-2020 and was published on 16-07-2024.
  • However, this looks like a new improved version considering a similar-looking design was filed back in December 2018.
  • This was published in 2019 by the KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office). I
  • Samsung seems to be working on a newer design laptop with an extendable laptop screen. This will be one of the applications of its flexible screen.

  • The laptop will have a usual screen on the front, but there will be two more screens/panels that will extend from the right and left sides. One can bend to fold the screen after use.
  • Once fully expanded, the laptop will offer an ultra-wide aspect ratio to fit more content on the screen.
  • The patent images suggest the newer version appears to have curved edges compared to a flat panel on the previous model.

The images suggest there will be some sort of hinge mechanism in place to hold the two other screens on the left/right. This will also allow the screens to be fixed at certain angles like completely open all the way through or just about open like a book. As this is a patent listing, we don’t know much about the hardware at the moment.

Since this is in the patent stage, there’s no way to tell whether Samsung will ever introduce a working commercial model with a similar design or whether this will remain one of those prototype models that will be showcased at tech shows. Whatever it is, the future sure looks quite exciting.
