Days after Samsung made headlines with a rollable smartphone likely to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4, the South Korean tech giant seems to be working on an expandable display. We’ve unearthed a concept patent by Samsung that showcases an expandable display that uses a rolling mechanism. With Samsung aims to omit the need for an additional display (secondary display) and use just one display on the device that can be expanded as and when needed. Let’s look at the patent document to better understand the expandable display concept.

The patent was filed at the WIPO as an “Expandable display,” and it was published on May 27th, 2022. The patent also reveals that the display expends in all directions. Previously, Samsung patented a rolling display concept, and it seems like the company will use a similar concept to put this into action.

After expanding the display, it displays content that was not visible on a smaller screen due to less screen real-estate. It can be attractive when you’re at an office or public place, and you can expand the display as and when needed, or you can simply use it as a normal display smartphone.

Since it is a patent document, we’re not sure if the product will make it to production, as is the case with most patents like this. Word is on the streets that a Samsung rollable smartphone is in the works, and we might see the first rolling phone soon, but there is no word regarding an expandable display. However, there is no denying that an expandable display is a cool, innovative design, and it’ll definitely turn heads and grab anyone’s attention if released!
