Samsung TVs, monitors support Netflix in HDR10+: list of models, why it matters

Highlights
  • 2025 Samsung Neo QLED, OLED and Lifestyle TVs support HDR10+ Netflix streaming
  • Samsung says it will expand HDR10+ support across its product lineup.
  • With this update, you can experience enhanced realism and depth in Netflix content on Samsung TVs and monitors.

Netflix announced it supports HDR10+ content last month, and now Samsung Electronics has revealed its smart TVs and monitors will be among the supported devices. HDR10+ is an advanced form of HDR co-created by Samsung that can control brightness, contrast and colour levels on a scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame basis. So, Samsung expects Netflix in HDR10+ will offer “more immersive viewing experiences with vibrant colors and enhanced contrast” on its TVs and monitors. Let’s understand this better.

  • Eligible TVs: 2025 Samsung Neo QLED, OLED and Lifestyle TVs
  • Eligible monitors: 2025 and 2024 models

Taeyong Son, EVP, Visual Display division, Samsung Electronics, says the company will “continue collaborating with various partners to expand HDR10+ support across our (Samsung’s) product lineup and the broader streaming ecosystem.” So, you can expect support for more models in the future.

What is HDR10+ and why Netflix in HDR10+ matters

  • HDR10+ uses dynamic metadata present with select content to enhance brightness, contrast, and colour frame by frame or scene by scene. Metadata instructs the playback device how the content should be played.
  • Both the playback device (say, Samsung TV) and the content (Netflix movies or shows) should support HDR10+ metadata.
  • Now, unlike standard HDR10, which applies a single set of HDR instructions to the entire video, HDR10+ works frame by frame or scene by scene. So, it gets granular control and can ensure better details in dark and bright scenes.
  • It is also considered better than HDR10 because it supports 10-bit colour depth, Rec. 2020 colour space, and tone mapping (how a TV compensates for the colour data it doesn’t have by presenting an adjacent colour).
  • Samsung says you can experience “enhanced realism and depth” on Netflix content thanks to this update.
  • HDR10+ is royalty-free, and so cheaper than its competitor Dolby Vision.
