Sonos has announced Sonos 27, the latest version of its home audio operating system. It features AI assistant integration, new ways to move sound around the home, a redesigned app, and two new flagship products: Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra. For India, the immediate milestone is the arrival of Sonos Play on September 8.

AI control: open platform, your choice of assistant
The most significant strategic announcement in Sonos 27 is its approach to AI. Rather than locking users into a single assistant, Sonos is supposedly opening its platform to any AI the listener prefers. Sonos 27voice is the company’s own assistant built specifically for music and mood curation. Sonos 27mcp is the more interesting addition. It allows users to connect any external AI assistant or agent to the system, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
In practice, this should mean, ideally, a user can ask ChatGPT to play music across rooms in their home without leaving an ongoing conversation in the ChatGPT interface.
Looking further ahead, Sonos also previewed Custom Agents. It’s a feature that supposedly will let users build their own agents with custom models, personas, and voices, running through the Sonos system. It is an ambitious extension of the open platform philosophy. One that sets Sonos apart from smart home audio competitors that continue to operate within closed ecosystems.
Sonos Fabric: sound that moves with you
Sonos Fabric is the system-level capability that enables Sonos products to sense each other and adapt their roles accordingly. Two new features built on Fabric are rolling out this fall.
Headphone Linking connects Sonos Ace Ultra directly to the Sonos system. It allows listeners to push and pull audio between nearby speakers and their headphones. It supposedly makes the sound follow the listener rather than staying tied to a room. This launches as an Early Access feature.
Sonos Positioning Technology uses high-frequency sound to detect where a speaker is physically located and changes its role within the system based on that position. The practical application is that compatible portable speakers automatically become rear surrounds when moved into position behind a listening seat, without any manual configuration.
New hardware: Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra
Beam Ultra is a mid-size soundbar delivering true 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos, bringing full spatial audio to a more compact form factor than Sonos’ larger soundbar offerings. Sonos Ace Ultra builds on the existing Ace headphone with hardware specifically designed for deeper system integration, including the Headphone Linking feature. Both products have been announced globally, but India availability dates are yet to be confirmed.
Sonos Play
The most immediately relevant announcement for Indian buyers is Sonos Play, arriving on September 8. The speaker is designed to function both as a permanent home speaker and a portable device. It connects over Wi-Fi for grouping across rooms, pairs for stereo, and supports Automatic Trueplay tuning that adapts sound to any environment. Battery life is rated at 24 hours, the build is IP67 waterproof, and a built-in power bank can charge a connected phone. A Charging Base anchors it at home when not on the move.
A notable first is the ability to group multiple Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers directly from a Bluetooth connection when away from home, extending the multi-room experience beyond the home network for the first time. The speaker is designed for longevity, with a replaceable battery and optimised power management.
Sonos 27 represents a deliberate shift in how the company positions itself. Rather than a collection of premium connected speakers, Sonos is building toward a home audio operating system, one where intelligence, adaptability, and openness are the defining characteristics rather than hardware quality alone. The open AI approach is the clearest expression of that direction, and it is a meaningful differentiator in a category where Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant have historically required users to pick a side.
The Sonos Positioning Technology and portable surrounds feature are also worth noting as genuinely novel capabilities. The idea that a speaker can sense its own location and reconfigure its role in a system without user input is a hardware-software integration that most competitors are not yet attempting at this level.
For Indian buyers, Sonos Play on September 8 is the actionable launch. Pricing for India has not been confirmed at the time of writing.
