Sony has filed a new patent for a controller that aims to deliver a much more immersive gaming experience. The company is apparently looking to add temperature feedback to PlayStation controllers. As reported by Exputer, Sony’s new patent application suggests that the PlayStation controller would simulate what is going on in the game with temperature feedback. If Sony manages to achieve temperature feedback on its controller, it would be a great addition on top of haptic feedback.

Sony’s controller patent application reads, “An aspect of the present invention to solve the above problem of the conventional example is a controller that includes a sensor using an elastically deformable elastic member, and this sensor detects user’s contact with or deforming action of the elastic member and outputs an electric signal based on the detected contact or deforming action in question.” The controller will be made of plastic materials that are hard to break or bend, similar to the current DualSense controllers. While describing the temperature changing aspect, the filing states adding a sealed gas bubble in the elastic member. The controller’s circuit would most likely feature a temperature control apparatus such as a Peltier element. This could be used to control the volume of gas in the bubble to modify the shape of elastic member. As a result, a player could feel the controller warming up or cooling down based on the game they are playing.

Sony has already made a great controller for PS5 with DualSense, which comes with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The company has also launched DualSense Edge controller that takes the user experience to another level with a lot customizability. DualSense Edge lets you adjust various inputs, replace buttons, remap controls, and create and save control profiles. This controller is built for players who want to customize their experience based on the game they are playing.
