“The iCLICK is the most loaded smartphone from the brand yet, and comes with a 16MP rear shooter and 20MP front camera”
Earlier this year, Transsion Holdings’ sub-brand, TECNO launched its camera-centric Camon series of smartphones in India. The brand debuted the series with the launch of TECNO Camon i (first impressions), and then went to launch the Camon I Air and Camon I Sky (first impressions). The handset maker has now expanded the range with the launch of the Camon iCLICK. We recently got the smartphone in our labs, and here’s our unboxing and initial impressions of the device.
Tthe Camon iCLICK comes in a black box with the imagery of the handset along with the branding on the top and sides. At the bottom of the box, the brand has listed the core specifications of the smartphone. Take off the lid and you will find the Camon iCLICK lying atop a cardboard box containing a SIM-ejector tool, a transparent protective case, a screen protector, and documentation. You will also find a wall charger, a micro-USB cable and a pair of earphones (with extra ear tips).
Coming to the handset, we will forgive you for mistaking it for Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (review) or Redmi Note 5 Pro (review) from the front. That’s because, the Camon iCLICK has a bezel-less fascia with rounded edges and an earpiece, along with a few sensors and a selfie LED flash above the screen. Flip the phone over, and the handset resembles the TECNO Camon i Sky with the rear camera module and LED flash in the top left corner, and the circular fingerprint scanner with the TECNO branding towards the center. The SIM slot, volume buttons, and the textured power button are all stacked at the right edge of the smartphone. The bottom of the device is home to the loudspeaker grille, micro-USB port, and 3.5mm audio jack. The handset sports a curved polycarbonate unibody design, which makes it ergonomic and lightweight. Take a gander at the gallery below to see the smartphone from all angles.
The TECNO Camon iCLICK ships with a 6-inch HD+ display bearing a screen-to-body ratio of 83.9 percent. The brand has integrated features like outdoor mode, Eye Care mode and inadvertent mode to prevent pocket dialing. In the indoor lighting, the display is vivid with sharp text and colour temperature on the cooler side, which is easy on eyes.
Moving on to the performance, the device jumps between apps and handles animations smoothly, thanks to the 2.0GHz 64-bit octa-core MediaTek Helio P23 processor mated to 4GB RAM. Out of the 64GB expandable storage, around 54GB space is available to the user. The handset boots HiOS based on Android 8.1 Oreo and is powered by a 3,750mAh battery. For security, there is a fingerprint sensor as well as the face unlock capability.
Moving on to the USP of the Camon iCLICK, the smartphone ships with a 20-megapixel f/2.0 selfie snapper with a dual-LED flash and 16-megapixel rear shooter with f/1.8 aperture accompanied by a quad-LED flash. Both cameras are backed by Artificial Intelligence and offer modes like Beauty, auto scene recognition, and bokeh. Our initial shots with both front and rear cameras were quite impressive, though we need to test the cameras in other situations before passing any judgment. Sadly, however, the portrait mode in the selfie camera has visible soft edges, which makes the output look artificial.
The TECNO Camon iCLICK carries a price tag of Rs 13,999 and it will be available to buy via major brick and mortar stores across the country. At this price point, the handset is aiming to compete with some tough contenders like the Realme 1 (review), ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 (review), Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro (review) and Honor 7X (review), all of which are compelling options and offer better internals. However, the Camon iCLICK offers a powerful selfie camera and can also be purchased from a neighbourhood retailer. Now it remains to be seen if that’s enough to stand out from the competition.
