Trends analysis

With this wrapping up the top 10 Android phones list for the month of April, here’s looking at some of the clear user preference trends that we observed in the Indian smartphone market last month. From camera and brand preferences, to a rising probability of more users splurging more than usual on their smartphones, here’s what we inferred.

Smartphone ASPs are clearly rising

Up until 24 to 36 months ago, the average selling price (ASP) of a smartphone in India was still within the Rs 10,000-12,000 ballpark margin. This has clearly shifted — in April’s top 10 list, eight of the 10 smartphones are priced at Rs 18,999 and above. With ASPs touching the Rs 20,000 milestone, it is clear that users are likely considering the option of easily available EMIs, discounts, and other financing offers in order to buy more expensive devices, but use them for longer.

BBK Electronics brands rule user preferences

Nine out of 10 smartphones in the top 10 list are from brands that belong to the BBK Electronics conglomerate, showing a move in the industry that has seen Samsung and Xiaomi — two of the longest leaders of the Indian smartphone market — face stiff competition from OnePlus, Realme, Vivo, and iQOO. While market reports have pegged Samsung as still the leader of the industry, it is clear that at least last month, it is the BBK quartet that ruled user interest.

Buyer interest is low, but not out

With over 32,000 smartphone searches daily, it is clear that buyer interest in smartphones may be low, but not out. Despite the market downturn, buyers are considering new smartphones, as the advent of 5G connectivity may have piqued interest among users to upgrade their devices. It now remains to be seen if the demand picks up further — or declines — in the coming months.

64MP cameras hit the sweet spot

Five of the phones in the top 10 list feature 64MP primary rear cameras, clearly showing that it is this that has hit the sweet spot among modern smartphone cameras. With most images now algorithm-enhanced, 64MP smartphone camera sensors appear to be doing the trick in terms of offering the right balance of features, resolution, space usage within the smartphone chassis, and other factors too.
