Hits and Misses

It’s very difficult for a device to remain steady on their position and more importantly, even remain in the Top 20 list. While some devices were successful in doing so, there were a couple of exits making way for some new faces in the list-

The New Entrants

Sony Xperia C– 2nd Position

After focusing on the high end range with its flagship devices, Sony has now started shifting its attention towards the mid-segment. It’s the first device from Sony which comes with a MediaTek quad-core processor (MT6589 clocked at 1.2 GHz). Targeted as a budget phablet, it features a 5 inch TFT display with qHD resolution of 960 x 540 pixels (~ 220 ppi). It also gets a 8 MP camera at its back with Exmor R sensor capable of recording Full HD videos @ 30fps, while a VGA front-facing camera is useful for video chatting.

BlackBerry Z10– 10th Position

It’s been more than six months since the launch of Z10 as the first device running on the touch optimized BlackBerry 10 Operating System. But, it never won consumers’ attention probably because it was priced too high. Company realized it sooner than later and slashed the Z10’s price to Rs 29,990 ahead of festive season, leading to  surge in interest. It features a 4.2 inch HD display, 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of onboard storage which can be further expanded via microSD card. In camera department, it gets a 8 MP primary camera with LED flash and 2 MP front camera.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro– 12th Position

In a comeback of sorts, Galaxy Grand Quattro has reentered our top 20 chart again after being ousted from it during the month of September. The Grand Quattro gets its name from the 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 200 quad-core processor powering it along with a 512 MB of RAM. It offers a 4.7 inch display with the resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, 4 GB internal storage which can be expanded up to 32 GB via microSD card. Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a 4.5 inch display with 720p resolution, 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of inbuilt storage. It also sports an 8.7 MP PureView camera supplemented with Dual LED flash while featuring Optical Image Stabilization.

Sony Xperia MSony Xperia M Dual– 17th Position

This comes as a bit of a surprise as the Xperia M is already available in the Top Mobiles list, and now its being accompanied by its dual SIM variant. Design wise, its made of plastic, but shares the same aesthetics as of the premium range with aluminum buttons including signature power button. The device has a 4 inch TFT display, dual-core processor of 1 GHz coupled with a 1 GB of RAM. For shutterbugs, it offers a 5 MP rear camera and 0.3 MP secondary camera.

Trend Analysis

People are moving back to global brands

Samsung has seven of its devices and is closely followed by Sony which has five mobile phones in the list. Together they account for more than 50 percent devices amongst top 20 mobile phones. What’s more interesting is that the Indian success story, Micromax is losing to global giants with only two of its mobile phones present, as compared to 4 or 5 devices previously. //

Increasing demand for mid-range devices

There’s an uniform distribution of devices across various price segments; however, demand is highly skewed towards mid-range segment. Between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000, there are as many as 11 devices from manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, Nokia and Micromax. Only two devices are in the entry-level range, while brands like Apple and Samsung cross the Rs. 40,000 range for the iPhone(s) and Galaxy Note. //

Android is the most popular OS

Amongst the 20 devices, 14 of them are running on Android Operating System version 4.1 or above, except Galaxy S Duos, which runs on version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. However, Android is not as dominating as it was previously, since we’ve now two iOS devices, three WP devices, thanks to Nokia’s flagship technologies and even a BlackBerry 10 OS powering Z10. //
