Top 20 mobile phones in India in April 2018: 91mobiles insights

“Here are the top devices which users searched for in the month of April”

The fact that Samsung and Huawei brought their latest flagship smartphones to the Indian market soon after their global unveiling, suggests the importance of the subcontinent for phonemakers. In fact, even the OnePlus 6 and Honor 10 will be launched in the country almost at the same time as their international debuts. But it’s important to see if this shift in the brands’ strategies reflects in the consumer mindsets as well. That’s what we’re here to find out today by checking out the most searched for smartphones in the month of April on 91mobiles. It’s worth noting however, that the list is just an indication of the popularity of these handsets, but isn’t necessarily a reflection of their sales.

Top 5

Considering the fact that Xiaomi’s latest smartphone in the Redmi Note series usually occupies the throne in our top 20 charts, it’s quite surprising to see the Note 5 Pro (review) being displaced to second place within a few months of its launch by Vivo’s V9 (review). The notch-toting selfie-centric smartphone from Vivo jumped two spots to sit at the first position in April, and is being given company by its arch-rival the OPPO F7 (review), which leaped 15 places to reach the third position. The Redmi Note 5 (review) slipped two spots to find the fourth seating, while the Nokia 7 Plus has made an impressive debut ion the popularity chart at fifth place.

The complete list

While there aren’t many new devices in the top 20 most popular phones of April, there have been quite a few ups and downs. Many notable phones seemed to have lost the popularity they used to enjoy, while other smartphones have gained at their expense to reach higher rankings. Let’s take a look at the entire list, wherein alongside the name of the smartphone, we’ve also mentioned the change in its position from the previous month, its segment and month of launch in the Indian market.

Hits and misses

New entrants

Nokia 7 Plus: 5th position

As mentioned in our review, the 7 Plus is the best smartphone in Nokia’s lineup for 2018, and the same seems to ring true for buyers as well. The first smartphone from the brand’s stable to offer an 18:9 display comes with powerful features in the upper mid-tier segment. From Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 processor to Carl Zeiss-certified dual rear cameras, from the Android One platform to its 3,800mAh battery – the device has a loaded spec sheet.

New Nokia 6: 9th position

Accompanying the 7 Plus is the 2018 edition of the Nokia 6 (first impressions), which brings some upgraded specs to the table. The 5.5-incher now comes with a better SoC in the form of the octa-core Snapdragon 630. The metal-clad smartphone also falls under the Android One umbrella, and ships with v8.1 Oreo in its stock avatar.

10.or G: 13th position

While the 10.or G was launched in September last year, it seemed to have regained popularity, thanks to recent price cuts. With its sub-Rs 10k price point, the handset comes with solid specs such as a 5.5-inch full HD displays, Snapdragon 625, dual rear cameras, and a powerful 4,000mah battery. The handset runs Android Nougat out of the box, with a promised upgrade to Oreo.

OPPO A83: 19th position

The A83 (review) kickstarted the year 2018 for the brand, and still seems to be going strong. The bezel-less smartphone offers decent specs and a high-res selfie camera in the Rs 15,000 segment. The device is built around a 5.7-inch display and comes powered by MediaTek Helio P23 SoC, which is paired with 3-gigs of RAM. For cameras, the handset sports a 13-megapixel shooter at the back and a 13MP front camera.

Trend analysis

Nokia makes a headway in the coveted list

No of devices by brands in the top 20 list in April 2018 - 91mobiles

While Xiaomi continues to dominate the list of top 20 smartphones, it’s interesting to see the Finnish brand following it with three of its devices included in the list. On the back of its latest smartphones – along with the original Nokia 6 (review) – the brand has surpassed Samsung, which only has two devices in the top 20 most popular phones. Both OPPO and Honor also join the Korean brand with two devices each, while all the other phonemakers have just one smartphone included in the list for the month of April.

Bezel-less smartphones gain popularity

While the trend of bezel-less smartphones (phones with tall aspect ratio screens) started just last year, it seemed to have got enormously popular. More than 50 percent devices in the top 20 list offer bezel-less designs, ensuring an immersive visual experience. And the best part is that these handsets are now available across different price segments, not just in the high-end segment.
