Vivo introduces Funtouch OS 9.0 with dark mode, Always-On display, revamped UX, and a lot more

“Vivo isn’t exactly known for great software backup but it seems the company is finally paying attention”

After unveiling the Vivo X27 lineup yesterday in China, Vivo also introduced a new Funtouch OS 9 for Vivo phones. Funtouch OS 9.0 is based on Android Pie and like previous versions of Funtouch will be overlaid heavily by Vivo’s customisations on top of it. The smartphone maker said that the new interface comes with as many as 72 new features and 55 under-the-hood optimisations, along with a simple UI to provide a much better user experience.

To begin with visible changes, Vivo has introduced rounded icons with more curves that complement the curved corners of the new FullView display smartphones. New wallpapers have been introduced as well and stock apps interface has also been redesigned to highlight the content and make it more reachable. Furthermore, Vivo has also introduced a dark mode that Google and other Android OEMs are also including it in their new user interfaces.

Vivo has also added some visual eye candy to the lock screen with new animations for the on-screen fingerprint reader. For now, there seem to be three of them; an Always-On display is also now a part of Funtouch OS 9.0. There isn’t a lot of detail regarding behind-the-scenes improvements as of now. However, the announcement was in China and the same OS has not come to most Vivo phones outside of the country. The new Vivo X27 comes with FunTouch OS 9.0 and we expect the new version to come to the V11 Pro in the near future as well while the Vivo V15 Pro runs the new version out-of-the-box.
