Vivo X Fold 5 display, Apple Watch pairing and dust and waterproof rating confirmed ahead of launch

Vivo has started teasing its next foldable, the X Fold 5. It will arrive as a successor to the Vivo X Fold 3 from last year. While the exact launch date is currently undisclosed, the handset is expected to be released sometime later this month. Vivo product manager Han Boxiao has confirmed some key hardware details of the X Fold 5. The top executive revealed the Vivo X Fold 5 will feature an 8T LTPO AMOLED inner and outer display.

  • Han Boxiao says the Vivo X Fold 5 will feature up to 4,500 nits local peak brightness, paired with full brightness high-frequency PWM dimming and TUV Rheinland global eye protection 3.0 certification.

  • It is said that the display will feature ultra-high resolution and ultra-high PPI. The Zeiss Master Colour is claimed to offer accurate colours. 
  • The Vivo executive notes that the X Fold 5 is functional even in -30-degrees centigrade with the second-generation semi-solid battery technology that is said to extend the solid electrolyte from the positive electrode to the negative electrode based on the previous generation.
  • The foldable is confirmed to offer IPX8 (3-meter deep water) + IPX9 (high temperature and high pressure) + IPX9+ (underwater folding) rating, and is also said to be the first in the industry with an IPX5 dustproof folding screen.
  • Vivo X Fold 5 is also confirmed to arrive with the ability to connect with an Apple Watch. It can even display incoming calls, text messages and also the health data recorded on the watch. The health data also syncs with the Health app.

  • There’s also iCloud Connection built directly into the built-in file management of the Vivo X Fold 5.
  • The Vivo X Fold 5 and iPhone dual-device interconnection enables SMS and verification codes received by the iPhone to be viewed simultaneously on the X Fold 5.

Vivo X Fold 5: what do we know so far?

The Vivo X Fold 5 specifications have been leaked recently. Here’s what we know.

  • Display: The Vivo X Fold 5 is said to sport a 6.53-inch and 8.03-inch internal and external AMOLED displays. It is said to get a 2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.
  • Processor: The foldable is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. This will be an upgrade over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on the predecessor. This should bring upgrades with 30 percent performance improvement and 20 percent improved power efficiency.
  • Cameras: The Vivo X Fold 5 could house a 50MP IMX921 primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide camera and a 50MP IMX882 3x periscope telephoto camera. It could house a 32MP lens on the front for selfies.
  • Memory: The phone might pack up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.
  • Dimensions: The Vivo X Fold 5 is said to be significantly thin, measuring at 4.3mm when closed and 9.3mm when open. In comparison, the predecessor offered 4.7mm and 10.2mm thickness, respectively.
  • Battery: The Vivo foldable is tipped to house a 6,000mAh battery with 90W wired and 30W wireless charging. This is a notable jump compared to 5,500mAh and 5,700mAh cells on the previous standard and Pro models.

While the price details of the foldable are under wraps, the Vivo X Fold 3 debuted in China at CNY 6,999 (around Rs 83,500). Meanwhile, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro debuted in India at Rs 1,59,999.
