WhatsApp reportedly working on animated stickers for Android, iOS and the Web

“Unlike GIFs that stop after a few seconds, WhatsApp animated stickers will go on playing throughout”

WhatsApp is reportedly working on animated stickers for Android, iOS and the Web, according to noted WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo who has also shared screenshots of the feature. Since the feature is currently under development, it isn’t available right away. Unlike the regular GIFs, which stop playing after a few seconds, the animated stickers go on playing throughout.

The WhatsApp Animated stickers could be included in the stickers pack and will have to be downloaded by the end user. WhatsApp will preview the animation in the sticker and in the chat section as well. WABetaInfo also notes it will also include support for third parties stickers, much like the traditional stickers. WhatsApp tested something similar in the past but dropped it quickly for reasons unknown. However, it plans to roll out the animated stickers with the future updates this time, for both Android, iOS, and Web version. At the moment, there are no details regarding the public rollout of the feature.

Separately, WhatsApp is also working on a standalone app for iPad and will reportedly work with all iPads, not just the cellular variants. The Facebook-owned platform could let users sign in using the same number that is used on their smartphone, either via OTP or QR codes, similar to WhatsApp Web. While most of the app and its functionalities remain the same as that on the iPhone, the user interface has been redesigned to make it compatible with the iPad’s larger display and resolution. It also includes support for Touch ID to lock the app natively, so we can expect Face ID support to be there too.
