“The WhatsApp feature to watch videos right from notifications is currently available with iOS beta version 188.8.131.52”
WhatApp is reportedly testing a new feature that will let users watch videos directly from the push notification panel. You won’t have to open the app and the particular chat or group anymore to watch it. Sadly Android users won’t be able to enjoy this feature as reports currently only mention iOS.
WABetaInfo tweeted about this feature, claiming that “WhatsApp is rolling out the possibility to view videos directly in the push notification for any iOS beta user having the 184.108.40.206 version installed.” It further states that the feature will soon be available to all App Store users.
It’s functioning wasn’t highlighted by WABetaInfo, but another twitter user by the name of Carsten Knobloch posted the feature’s workings on the same thread. It shows the video running right in the notification bar of an iPhone. Further the user says that his wife is using the feature with the App Store version and not the beta, which is interesting cause the feature hasn’t been rolled out officially yet.
In September, WhatsApp had introduced a notification extension feature for iPhone, that allowed users to view images and GIFs right from the notification panel, without opening the app. Now combined with the video preview, users will be able to check out media files shared with them more conveniently. Currently you have to open the app to check out a video, and in doing so your last seen changes.
