The trend of releasing movies on OTT platforms either after their theatrical releases or directly on OTT platforms started mostly after the pandemic. One significant reason that led to such a trend was low box office collections. This left filmmakers with no choice but to release the movie on OTT platforms to compensate for the incurred loss as much as possible. However, the said trend has seemingly started to diminish now as both Hrithik Roshan’s Vikram Vedha and Varun Dhawan’s Bhediya have still not been released on any OTT platform, even after their theatrical releases 19 and 11 weeks ago respectively.
A source gave a reason to Bollywood Hungama. As per the source, both films will rather stream on a new app by Reliance Jio. “The idea is to premiere not just Vikram Vedha and Bhediya but also several other films. As per the plan, every week, there’ll be a film premiere. While some of these are theatrical releases, a few of them will get a direct OTT release. The list of all these films will be hopefully unveiled at the time of the launch of the app.”
Vikram Vedha received positive reviews, starring Saif Ali Khan as SSP Vikram and Hrithik Roshan as Vedha Betal, both in lead roles. It also included Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf, and Yogita Bihani as cast members. The movie portrayed a story of an honest police officer and his journey of tracking down and killing a dreaded gangster. Bhediya, on the other hand, received positive reviews too and starred Varun Dhawan in the lead role as Bhaskar Sharma along with other famous actors like Kriti Sanon, Abhishek Banerjee, and Saurabh Shukla.
