What do TOPS mean in AI? Does it matter?

TOPS is the metric for measuring the performance capability of a CPU, GPU, or, in this case, an NPU. It tells how many trillions of operations a processor can run in a second. The higher the TOPS of an NPU, the faster or more capable performer it is deemed to be for on-device AI operations.


However, this is a theoretical figure and doesn’t necessarily reflect real-world performance. Also, ChatGPT and other current AI generation tools will fare just as fine on a regular PC/laptop as a flagship laptop with a big TOPS value. Microsoft’s AI Recall automatically takes a snapshot of your screen every 5 seconds and stores these snapshots as a timeline locally in the PC. You can revisit this timeline later and ask Recall about any tasks you performed on the PC and it will locally analyse the stored data and try to show what you are looking for in a text or image format.

To trigger Recall, hit the Windows button + J button together. You can search for a keyword or phrase by typing or voice (using the mic option).

Recall will be an opt-in feature.

Cocreator is a new option in MS Paint that creates images based on given text prompts. It is powered by Open AI’s Dall-E model. You can choose from one of the many artwork styles given in the app.
