With Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes scrapped, e-commerce websites make changes to COD payments

“Amazon disables COD payments entirely and Flipkart has disabled COD for all orders below Rs. 2,000”

Last evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a surprising move announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes could not be used for legal tender starting November 9th. In lieu of the discontinued currency denominations, the RBI has also announced new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes. While we understand that this sudden decision could cause discomfort for the common masses, it seems to be a cause of concern for e-commerce websites too. Most online retailers have made a few changes to cash-on-delivery (COD) payments.

Flipkart has a message on its app saying the now discontinued Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes will not be accepted for existing and new COD orders. Moreover, there is no COD now for orders above Rs. 2,000. Amazon has gone one step ahead and entirely disabled COD payments on all orders. Snapdeal has only a single message that clearly indicates that delivery personnel won’t accept the discontinued notes. Shopclues has gone ahead and greyed out the COD option without giving any clear reason as to why it is doing so.

It is not just the ecommerce websites facing the heat. Services like Uber and Indigo have also categorically stated that in the wake of the new ruling by Prime Minister Narendra Modi they won’t accept Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Just note (no pun intended) that all these are minor inconveniences until the new notes become commonplace.
