Xiaomi’s numbered series showcases the company’s flagships. However, the vanilla Xiaomi 15 lacked the periscope telephoto camera you expect from a flagship. Xiaomi seems to be correcting that with the successor, the Xiaomi 16. While there’s plenty of time before the phone would launch, this rumour could be enough to excite its fans and potential buyers. Here’s what this camera means for a user.
Xiaomi 16 periscope camera upgrade (rumour)
As per tipster Smart Pikachu on Weibo, the Xiaomi 16 could get a periscope camera. He says the small-screen device from the Xiaomi 16 lineup will have this feature, i.e., the vanilla variant.
Only the Pro model in the Xiaomi 15 lineup had this feature. The Xiaomi 15 Pro consists of a 50MP periscope telephoto camera with 5X optical zoom. The Xiaomi 15 features 3x optical zoom from its 50MP camera. But it isn’t periscope. So, some of you may wonder why it matters.
Use of periscope camera
A periscope camera achieves higher focal lengths while maintaining a sharp focus on the subject. It uses prism or strategically positioned mirrors (horizontally at 90 degrees angle) to reflect and traverse light in such a way that the distance travelled by the light from the lens to the sensor becomes longer, hence a longer focal length, which enables a longer zoom.
Besides the Xiaomi 15 Pro and supposedly the Xiaomi 16, the impending Xiaomi 15 Ultra is also believed to have a 200MP periscope camera. The stability, clarity and definition of the clicks are ensured by OIS, PDAF, the lens’ aperture, shutter, ISO, available light and other factors.
Coming back to the phone in question, the Xiaomi 16 could therefore offer enhanced zooming from its rear camera setup. Rest, we don’t have any details about the phone yet. Considering the predecessors launched in October, we can expect a similar timeline for this one. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 15 is yet to launch in India.
