“The February 19th Xiaomi Mi 9 event will clearly be aimed at upstaging the Samsung Galaxy S10 series launch that will be held a day later”
Xiaomi President Lin Bin and CEO Lei Jun have been constantly teasing Weibo users with riddles, all of which seem to suggest that the company’s next flagship — the Mi 9 might launch on the February 19th. The two top executives, along with others in the company, have been using the number 9102 a lot in their Weibo posts. Initially, it was taken as simply a reversal of 2019, the current year, but some in the industry are now speculating that this could be hinting at a February 19th launch for the Mi 9 instead.
What’s even more interesting is that all these hints have being delivered on Weibo via an unnamed Xiaomi smartphone. Some leaks and teasers regarding the Mi 9 are also doing rounds on Weibo which suggest that the smartphone come equipped with a triple rear-camera setup and an in-display fingerprint reader. It is also said to feature some kind of a fast charging technology.
Going by previous leaks, the smartphone will be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and a 3,500 mAh battery. The triple rear-camera setup is expected to house a Sony IMX586 48-megapixel lens along with another 12-megapixel lens and a 3D ToF lens. Towards the front it could be equipped with 24-megapixel selfie shooter.
Recently Xiaomi also confirmed the development of its first foldable phone through a small teaser video where company president Lin Bin could be seen playing with a prototype headset. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 event is scheduled for 20th February and speculations are rife that alongside the Galaxy S flagship, the Korean giant will also unveil its foldable smartphone. And looking at the February 19th launch date for Mi 9 event, Xiaomi might event be planning to upset Samsung that day by becoming the first mainstream company to introduce a foldable phone. But all this should be taken with a pinch of salt as there’s no official confirmation from the manufacturer as of now.
