“Xiaomi has joined the club of Android One smartphone makers with the premium, dual camera-toting Mi A1”
Over the past couple of weeks, Xiaomi has been teasing the launch of its first dual camera smartphone in India. The rumour-mill indicated that the brand will be launching the Mi 5X in the country, but instead, the company at its event in India today has joined the club of Android One smartphone makers by launching the Mi A1 in the country. It comes as a variant of the Mi 5X, which boots MIUI 8 based on Android Nougat.
It’s worth mentioning that Google’s much-hyped low-cost Android One smartphone platform with stock Android experience was introduced in 2014, but it slowly faded away. Several smartphone makers in India collaborated with Google to launch Android One devices, but these brands don’t seem to be launching any more devices under the program. However, now it appears that the Mountain View tech giant has collaborated with Xiaomi to reboot the Android One program, surprisingly, in the mid-range segment.
The Android One Xiaomi Mi A1 is powered by a stock version of Android Nougat, which means it’s free of any bloatware. The phone will be getting major Android software upgrades for the next two years, with an update to Oreo due this year, with a promised update to Android P when it’s announced. The device also comes bundled with free unlimited high-quality storage on Google Photos.
Coming to the dual cameras of the Mi A1, the phone sports two 12-megapixel shooters at the rear – one wide-angle lens and one telephoto lens. The device also gets a dual-LED flash unit, portrait mode, background blur mode, optical zoom and more. For selfies and video calling, it has been provided with a 5-megapixel snapper.
As for the other specs, the Xiaomi Mi A1 flaunts a premium metal unibody design with a fingerprint sensor at the rear. The device comes with a 5.5-inch full HD display, and is fuelled by a 2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. The phone sports a beefy 4GB of RAM, Adreno 506 graphics and 64GB of storage, further expandable up to 128GB by inserting a microSD card. In terms of connectivity, you get 4G LTE, VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB Type-C, Infrared sensor and A-GPS. Powering the phone is a 3,080mAh battery.
The Xiaomi Mi A1 has been priced at Rs 14,999 in India, and is being offered in black, gold and rose gold hues. The phone will go on sale on Flipkart, Mi.com and Mi Home stores from September 12th at 12 pm. It will also be available via major brick-and-mortar stores across the country. The launch offers include up to 200GB additional 4G data for Airtel users. The brand has also revealed that the device will go on sale in all major markets where it has a presence.
