“The Oreo update for Mi Mix 2 brings Face Unlock and gesture support”
While Google has already rolled out the Android Oreo update last year in May, brands are slowly and gradually updating their smartphones to the latest iteration of the operating system. The latest addition to the bandwagon is Xiaomi, which has now started seeding the latest update to its Mi Mix 2 (review) smartphone. The handset received the MIUI version number 18.104.22.168 ODECNFA, which updates it to Android Oreo with a couple of significant new features. The update package size reportedly sits around 1.4GB.
With the latest update, the Mi Mix 2 now supports face unlock feature for additional security besides the run-of-the-mill fingerprint scanner on the rear panel. Another notable addition is the support for gestures to perform various tasks on the device. Once updated, you can swipe up from the bottom of the display to go to the homescreen, swipe up and hold at the bottom of the display to pull the recents panel, and swipe from the left and right to return to the previous page. Uncannily similar to Apple iPhone X (review) gestures, these features were already available in the China ROM but are now available globally. Apart from these, you get standard Oreo goodies like battery optimisations, enhanced autofill, and picture-in-picture mode.
If you have not yet received the update over the air, you can head to the MIUI official download page and get it yourself. Do make sure to read the flashing guide before you flash the update on your phone.
To recap on the specs of the Mi Mix 2, the device comes with a 5.99-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, coupled with 6GB of RAM. The storage capacity on board is 128GB, which cannot be expanded since there’s no microSD card slot on board. Coming to the imaging department, the Mi Mix 2 flaunts a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor at the rear with 4-axis optical image stabilisation, and a 5-megapixel front shooter. A 3,400mAh battery with Qualcomm’s fast charging support completes the list of the specifications.
Xiaomi is offering the smartphone in single black hue in India. The device can be picked for Rs 32,999.
