“The Redmi 1s will go on sale along with official accessories like back panels, screen protectors and a flip cover.”
Following our report yesterday, Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra today announced that the company’s budget Redmi 1s (first impressions) smartphone will go on sale via Flipkart at 2 pm on September 2nd, for a “special price” of Rs 5,999. The company had originally announced the smartphone for Rs 6,999, but with the new pricing it’s even more enticing for the features it offers. It’s also worth noting that Flipkart First members will get early access to the Redmi 1s on September 1st.
The official accessories of the Redmi 1s will also be available at launch. In accordance with our report, these will include a screen guard kit in matte and shiny finishes priced at Rs 179, silicon covers for Rs 369, colourful back panels for Rs 469 and a leather-finish flip cover for Rs 559.
Xiaomi will also be selling extra batteries and an optional battery charger, but the pricing of these will be announced at a later stage. The Redmi 1s accepts a pair of regular-sized SIM cards, but Xiaomi is including two free SIM adapters in the box, for those who wish to use micro-SIMs.
For a quick recap of the specs, the Redmi 1s features a 4.7-inch 720p display, protected by a layer of Dragontrail glass. It is equipped with a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, working in tandem with 1GB of RAM. Internal storage is pegged at 8GB, with a microSD card slot for expansion up to 64GB. Camera features include an 8MP primary shooter with flash, and a 2MP front snapper. It draws power from a 2,000mAh battery. The OS on offer is Xiaomi’s MIUI, running on top of Android 4.3. The Redmi 1s also features a special Lite Mode, a simplified version of MIUI which is exclusive to the device.
Registrations for the Redmi 1s begin today at 6 pm on Flipkart. Like the Xiaomi Mi 3 (review), the Redmi 1s will follow the similar weekly flash-sale model. However, the company will be stocking a high number of units of the smartphone, and will reveal the exact quantity on its Facebook page soon.
At its price, the Redmi 1s promises to send the market into a tizzy. The competition includes the ASUS Zenfone 4, Motorola Moto E and Micromax Unite 2, which all seemed very compelling options until this morning, but now pale in comparison.
