  • Redmi K30 Pro only has an IP53 rating making it splash-proof but not water-resistant
  • Customers in China want Redmi to release an IP68-certified phone
  • Redmi CEO LU Weibing said he the company will launch an IP68 smartphone in the future

The Redmi K30 Pro was launched last month in China with flagship-grade hardware, including 5G capabilities. It was rumoured to come to India under the POCO brand name but the company has dispensed of these rumours. There are, however, a couple of things lacking on the phone. The Redmi K30 Pro lacks a high refresh rate display, like the ones seen on the OnePlus 7T or the Realme 6-series. There is also the fact that the device has an IP53 rating instead of a more durable IP68. Now Redmi CEO Lu Weibing has given a reason for a higher IP rating being skipped on the device.

Weibing in a Weibo post said that the splashproof IP53 rating was enough for the Redmi K30 Pro and that an IP68 rating was not needed. For the uninitiated, the higher an IP rating the more water- and dust-resistant your device is. Consequently, a higher IP rating also shoots up the cost of the phone, which is why companies making budget flagship smartphones tend to avoid it. Even so, Weibing’s comments did not go down well with consumers in China, who demanded that the company release a phone with an official IP-rating.

Even OnePlus, which does not officially certify its smartphones due to cost concerns, will be including an IP-rating for the first time in the OnePlus 8-series

Lu then responded to these comments by saying that Since everyone likes IP68 so much, we will also consider it for future products.” This could mean that the next Redmi flagship will most likely have a higher IP68 standard for water- and dust-resistance. Even OnePlus, which did not officially certify its smartphones due to cost concerns, will likely be including an IP-rating for the first time in the OnePlus 8-series. We will have to wait and see which Redmi phone gets an IP68 rating.
