Xiaomi XRING 01 announced as brand’s first high-end smartphone chip: here’s what we know

Highlights
  • XRING 01 is independently developed and designed by Xiaomi.
  • It is rumoured to be an octa-core processor based on TSMC’s 4nm process node.
  • Xiaomi XRING 01 could pack an Imagination Technologies IMG DXT72 GPU.

After a decade of development, Xiaomi has finally announced a self-developed high-end smartphone chip called Xiaomi XRING 01. The company’s CEO, Lei Jun, revealed the chip’s name and when it will launch. While Xiaomi has officially revealed the name and development details of the chip, the full specifications and first device details are expected later this month.

Xiaomi XRING 01 launch date

  • Mr Jun, in a Weibo post, said the Xiaomi XRING 01 will be launched in May 2025. So, it’s coming soon.

  • He emphasised that the XRING 01 is independently developed and designed by Xiaomi.
  • He reveals in the comments that Xiaomi began working on chips in September 2014. Let’s learn more about Xiaomi’s decade-long stride below. But first, here are a few more details we know about the Xiaomi chip:

Xiaomi XRING 01 rumours

Though official specifications are under wraps, here’s what early leaks suggest.

  • Process node: As per tipster Fixed Focus Digital, XRING 01 is fabricated on TSMC’s 4nm process node dubbed N4P.

  • CPU configuration: It is said to sport a 1+3+4 octa-core setup. This could include a Cortex-X925 prime core running at 3.2GHz, three Cortex-A725 performance cores running at 2.6GHz and four Cortex-A520 efficiency cores clocking at 2.0GHz.
  • Graphics: XRING 01 could pack an Imagination Technologies IMG DXT72 GPU with a 1.3 GHz clock speed. This is said to outpace the Adreno 740 GPU found with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (a Qualcomm flagship chip announced in November 2022).
  • Positioning: So these details suggest the XRING 01 performance could be high-end, but not expected to rival the current flagship chips from Qualcomm or MediaTek.
  • Other components: Xiaomi could incorporate a self-developed Image Signal Processor (ISP), and source the 5G modem and DSP from MediaTek, Synopsys, or Huawei.

Meanwhile, tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) has said that with this development, Xiaomi become a T0-level technology brand. In tech lingo, T0 stands for self-sufficient.

Xiaomi chip development history

  • In 2017, Surge S1 was Xiaomi’s first in-house SoC, built on a 28nm process. It featured an octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU, Mali-T860 MP4 GPU, and debuted within the Mi 5c.
  • In 2021, Surge C1 was announced as a custom Image Signal Processor (ISP), which debuted with the Mi Mix Fold.
The same year, Surge P1 was introduced as Xiaomi’s first in-house power management chip for fast charging. It supported 120W wired charging with thermal efficiency claims. It debuted in the Xiaomi 12 series.
  • In 2022, Surge G1 was announced as a battery management chip and it came inside the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
The same year, Surge T1 was announced as a security chip used for encryption and secure data storage. It came inside the Xiaomi 14 series phones.
  • And finally, on May 15, 2025, the high-end XRING 01 processor was announced.

If the XRING 01 lives up to its rumoured specs, it could mark a turning point in Xiaomi’s ambition to rival silicon giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek.
