4k, RAW, 60x zoom all in 21 grand? Unbeatable for the price!
29 Dec 2016 By Al Qumar On

I have now had my B700 for around 2 months. My observations:nnPROS:nn1. Setting up Snapbridge was quite a breeze, contrary to other user reports. It happened on the first try without any hiccups. Snapbridge can operate zoom as well as take photos. Does not seem to be able to start video recording.nn2. The zoom feature is excellent and in good light you can get amazing photos even at great distance. It has 60x optical zoom, there is extra digital zoom as well which can get you even closer, but the quality deteriorates quite rapidly as you might expect. nn3. The startup time, and the time taken from powering on to clicking your first photo, is very quick.nn4. Jpegs on normal setting have a size of 4.5 MB, while raw files are more than 32 MB! But the difference in quality, and the amount of post-processing you can do is astonishing. nn5. For those unfamiliar with superzoom cameras, it may appear at first as if you have difficulty in focusing and a lot of your initial shots will come out blurry. But don't worry, practice and you will soon be adept at getting great shots.nn6. I tried recording in 4k as well as 1080p, and if you look closely you can tell the difference even on a non-4k monitor or TV. nn7. Long exposure, multiple exposure, hyperlapse, light trails, 'moon' setting and other special features are quite good. nnCONS:nn1. I wish they had at least 720p slow motion video but the most you get is 120fps in a rather outdated 640x480 resolution. When viewed on a full HD screen these videos leave a lot to be desired. Having non HD slow motion on a bridge camera when even cellphones have HD slow motion is disappointing.nn2. It is not a weather-sealed camera, so one has to be careful to not get it wet. Ruggedness and durability is something we will get to know only as more people buy this model.nn3. Low-light photos and videos are not very good, but that is to be expected in a small-sensor camera.nnCONCLUSIONnnIt is a very good camera for the price, considering you get 4k video, RAW support, and 60x zoom with smartphone controls, in addition to all the other features normal for the bridge camera category. As of end 2016, I can't find anything else that can beat the Nikon Coolpix B700.
