Why should you watch 83?
The movie 83 by Kabir Khan is both fascinating and moving. This movie portrays the struggles of the Indian cricket team players during a time when India was not a cricketing powerhouse as it is today. There was also a scarcity of money, and television was not yet a common sight in every Indian home.
The movie opens with the Indian team arriving in England and Wales for the 1983 World Cup. It does not cover lengthy backstories for each player, instead of focusing only on how the players handled the scenario and tension during the World Cup. Ranveer Singh, who played Kapil Dev, performed admirably. The narrative describes how a team was re-formed under the leadership of a fresh and brave captain who hailed from a regular middle-class family on the outskirts. And believed in himself and his teammates all the time. One who refused to submit to the elitist Bombay lobby or the class difference, and instead battled and fought very hard by meeting their opponent's eye to eye and showing them how to win the match and also hearts all over the world. Furthermore, Pankaj Tripathy, as always, is charming in comedic moments and causes lumps in the throat during the sorrowful scenes.
Khan brilliantly used cinematic frames intermingled with genuine footage from the terrific game to inspire awe and enormous pride in the audience. The shift from actual to reel sequences, as well as the titles at the end of the film, deserve appreciation. If you're interested in learning more about the struggle and history around the 1983 match, and, of course, enjoy cricket, you should watch this movie.
