Production on the 7th and 8th installments were planned to be filmed back to back. This changed after the 7th completed filming, due to Tom Cruise having to leave to do promotion for the Top Gun sequel.

On January 15, 2019 the movie was announced to premiere on August 5th, 2022. On April 24th, 2020 Paramount delayed the 7th & 8th films due to COVID-19, the second release date for 8 was November 4th, 2022. On April 9th, 2021 Paramount delayed the seventh film to 2022, as a a result, the eighth film got a new release date of July 7th, 2023. On January 21st, 2022 the film was delayed a third time to June 28th, 2024.
Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames are the only fixed actors since the production of the Mission: Impossible film started in 1996.
