The DVD version of the movie has scenes and extended scenes that were cut/shortened in recent television airings of the film on the Hallmark Channel.
This was the 203rd Hallmark Hall of Fame (1951) television presentation.
The film's director, Michael Pressman, was an executive producer on "Picket Fences," which starred Kathy Baker, who played Ruth Doyle in this film.
In the beginning description, the children should be described as "neglected" NOT "wayward."
The actor who plays Mitch, the mechanic who fixes Emilie's car, is not listed in the credits on the DVD or on this website, and apparently not anywhere else, despite the fact that he has several speaking parts and plays an important role. Very strange. Could there be a reason this enjoyable character remains unnamed.
"Emilie: [reading the welcome sign] Bethlehem... we couldn't be *that* lost."
"Alanna: Why didn't we stay on the highway? Emilie: I thought you two would like to see the countryside. Ain't it pretty? Alanna: Is it because you thought the police might be after us? Emilie: You're a little too smart for your own good, you know that?"
