The film broke several rules of Bollywood formula films and was nonetheless successful. There were no songs, it was only two hours long, it was heroine-centered, and it was a horror story, not a love story.
Alhough the movie has no songs, a separate soundtrack album of the movie was released to promote the movie - a first for a Hindi-language Bollywood film. This, however, did not work, and the soundtrack sales were disappointing despite the success of the movie.
Abhishek Bachchan was earlier offered the role of Ajay Devgan but he opted out as his schedule was clashing with LOC 2003.
The film was huge success also because of its background music which made audience chill in theaters.
Rekha, Urmila Matondkar (as a child actor) and Victor Banerjee were in Kalyug 22 years before the release of this movie.
