Ku Klux Klan
Burden, an orphan raised within the Ku Klux Klan, attempts to break away when the girl he falls in love with urges him to leave for a better life together. In the late 90s, Andrew Heckler had actually gone to meet the real Reverend Kennedy in Laurens, South Carolina, after reading about the infamous Redneck Shop & KKK Museum in a newspaper article. After Heckler got the story from Reverend Kennedy, he began drafting the screenplay.
Received over a 5-minute standing ovation after its premiere at Sundance 2018.
At Sundance 2018, writer/director Andrew Heckler revealed that he had actually written the script for Burden back in 1998, and carried it for almost 20 years until it was finally produced.
Forest Whitaker originally signed on to do the film in 2006. It took director Andrew Heckler 16 years to finally get the film made.
After producer Robbie Brenner got nominated for an Academy Award for "Dallas Buyers Club," she texted director Andrew Heckler the same morning and said "You're next."
"Mike Burden: [to Reverend Kennedy] Sir, if I call you my enemy, I'll walk through Heaven and I will punch God just to get to you. If I call you my friend, I'll walk through Hell and I'll slap the devil for you."
