Producer D. Suresh Babu of Suresh Productions opted for a direct OTT release on Amazon Prime Video instead of a theatrical run. This decision followed a successful pattern of suspense thrillers finding a larger audience on streaming platforms in the Indian market.
Sobhita Dhulipala revealed in interviews that despite being comfortable performing in multiple languages, Telugu felt "seamless" and allowed her to incorporate family mannerisms and conversational nuances she couldn't access in other languages. She noted the podcast-driven narrative required extensive Telugu dialogue, which she delivered with greater ease than she anticipated.
The film's title references Andrei Chikatilo, the Soviet serial killer known as the "Butcher of Rostov" who murdered at least 52 people between 1978 and 1990. The Telugu word "Cheekati Lo" translates to "in the darkness." The film uses the serial killer reference thematically rather than as a direct biographical adaptation.
Sobhita Dhulipala's character, Sandhya, is depicted as a criminology graduate and podcast host. The actress spent time researching real true-crime podcasts to ensure her delivery during the voice-over segments felt authentic to the medium.
This film marks the first lead role for Sobhita Dhulipala in a straight-to-Telugu project. Although she has appeared in several high-profile Telugu films previously, such as Goodachari (2018) and Major (2022), those were bilingual productions or dubbed versions of projects primarily targeted at national audiences.
