John Wayne was very disappointed that his stunt double was so obvious in the final fight with Forrest Tucker.
John Wayne had some cosmetic surgery in September 1969, the month before filming began.
Although clearly labeled as the older man, at 58 Patric Knowles was actually four years younger than John Wayne. Wayne's character, John Simpson Chisum (referred to as J.S. Chisum on signage for the bank he founded), died five or six years after the events portrayed in this movie, at age 60. In real life cattle baron John Henry Tunstall (he is called "Henry" or "Henry Tunstall" throughout the film, probably to avoid the confusion of calling both Chisum and Tunstall "John," although he is referred to as J.H. Tunstall on signage over the general store) was 24 when he was murdered; he was played by the 58-year-old Knowles. The real John Chisum was 54 at the time the events in this film occurred, but he was played by the 62-year-old Wayne.
Geoffrey Deuel was nearly 27 at the time of filming. Billy the Kid was 18 at the start of the Lincoln County War in February 1878. The war lasted until 1881, when Billy was killed at the age of 21.
During filming, John Mitchum introduced John Wayne to his patriotic poetry. Seeing that Wayne was greatly moved by the word, Forrest Tucker suggested that the two collaborate to record some of the poetry, which resulted in a Grammy-nominated spoken-word album, America: Why I Love Her.
"James Pepper: You know, there's an old saying, Miss Sally. There's no law west of Dodge and no God west of the Pecos. Right, Mr. Chisum? John Simpson Chisum: Wrong, Mr. Pepper. Because no matter where people go, sooner or later there's the law. And sooner or later they find God's already been there."
"Justice J.B. Wilson: Mr. Murphy. Just how much of Lincoln County are you after? Lawrence Murphy: Well, Mr. Chisum came out here several years ago, put his name on everything he could. I've only been here a little while. Just getting started. Do you have anything to say to that, Mr. Chisum? John Simpson Chisum: Well I don't favor talking to vermin, but I'll talk to you just this once. You're not just getting started. The line's been drawn. What Billy did balanced the books so far. But if one of your men cross my land or even touch one of my cows, or do anything to that store, I'm not going to the sheriff, the governor, or the president of the United States. I'm coming to see you. Lawrence Murphy: Hmph. Mr. Chisum, that sounds like a threat. John Simpson Chisum: [John Chisum belts Murphy, knocking him down with his right fist] Wrong word. FACT!"
