During a late 1985 appearance on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson", shortly before the movie aired on TV, Manilow actually revealed the ending to the movie, leading much of the audience to groan. However, he mistakenly thought they groaned not because he revealed the ending, but because of what actually happened to his character at the end, leading Manilow to comment, "It's only a movie."
At the time of filming, Estelle Getty was auditioning for the role of Sophia on The Golden Girls.
"Tony Starr: [Improving a musical arrangement for Lola] We'll change the keys! That always works."
"Tony Starr: You're going to Havana, aren't you? Lola Lamar: You probably won't believe this, but I hadn't made up my mind. Something was holding me back. But you've certainly solved that problem. Yes, I am going to Havana. And so could you, if you'd stop acting like a dope. Tony Starr: Are you saying you told Mr Castelli about me? Lola Lamar: Not exactly. But I did ask him if he had a piano bar at the Tropicana. Tony Starr: Yeah, and? Lola Lamar: They don't. But I'm sure they have a bar - and there doesn't seem to be any favor that Mr Castelli won't do for me. Tony Starr: Listen Lola, do me a favor, huh? Go to Havana. Better yet, go to hell."
