Gerard Butler has stated in an interview that the film will have a more European feel to it, with the film taking place in the diamond district of Nice this time around.
During the bar scene where Donnie/Jean-Jacques (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) tries to win over the other criminals and vouch for Big Nick (Gerard Butler), the others start to quip "F--- the police!" around, which earns a curious glance from Jackson. This is a tongue-in-cheek glib Easter Egg moment, as "F--- Da Police" is the title of one of NWA's wildly popular songs, and Jackson's real life father Ice Cube was a founding member of the group.
Rico Verhoeven, who has a small part as Vigo, one of the Sardinian henchmen, is better known as a professional kickboxer and MMA Heavyweight Champion. According to Verhoeven, director Christian Gudegast told him that there would be a bigger role for him in the second sequel if it gets made.
Big Nick (Gerard Butler) says that he hates to wear suits, a possible jab to the fact that Butler was once rumored to succeed Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, a character known to primarily dress in suits.
Michael Bisping appears in the film as a continuation of his cameo in the first film, it is known that he had to retire from his UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) career, as he suffered permanent eye damage from a kick to the face from Vitor Belfort which resulted in Bisping sporting a glass eye for the rest of his career and life, although they share no scenes, Vitor Belfort also appears as a Sardinia henchmen. With Max Holloway making an appearance in the first film, it marks 3 former UFC Champions to make appearances in the franchise.
