In total, 15 dog trainers were needed to get all the dogs necessary for the movie. Already-trained dogs were preferred to avoid wasting time on training new dogs. Before shooting the dog scenes, Caleb Landry Jones spent three days with the trainers and their dogs to get comfortable with the canines.
Director Luc Besson said he first thought of the movie after reading a news story about a five-year old boy whose family put him in a cage. It made Besson think of the trauma the boy must have endured and how he must have overcome it.
The movie was originally supposed to be released in mid-April 2023, but positive feedback from buyers at the European Film Market pushed the distributors to aim for a fall release, in the hopes of securing a premiere at one of the fall film festivals. This is what eventually happened, as it was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.
Long-time collaborator Éric Serra composed the music for the movie, and found the movie very emotional, as even though he's a seasoned veteran, he admitted that it's not often that he finishes a day's work with tears in his eyes.
Shooting took place between May and July 2022, mostly in France, with the scenes on location shot in June 2022 in Newark, New Jersey.
