Echoes of Paradise (1987) was originally set and was to be filmed in Bali in Indonesia but damaging media coverage about the country in Australia meant the movie, for political reasons, was not shot and set there, with Phuket in Thailand replacing Bali in Indonesia.
The film is also very well known under the different title of "Shadows of the Peacock".
Director Phillip Noyce said of this film: "The original story was very different. It was really about the Balinese character's alienation and his coming to terms with it, coming to terms with a western influence and his traditional obligations, trying to work it all out. Wendy Hughes' character went through a very similar journey in the original story. It's just that the setting and the Balinese character were very different once we moved to Thailand."
The film's director Phillip Noyce and screenwriter & executive producer Jan Sharp were married at the time that this movie was made and released.
Co-stars Wendy Hughes and' Peta Toppano' both portrayed Jilly Stewart on television in two different "Return to Eden" television series. Hughes played the role in the Return to Eden (1983) TV Mini-Series in 1983, and Peta Toppano replaced her in the Return to Eden (1986) TV Series in 1986
