Stephanie Beatriz was originally going to be offered the role of Luisa. However, when the production met with her, they realized that she's not at all like her signature role of Rosa Diaz in Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013) but much more bubbly. So they offered her the part of Mirabel instead.
The conversation between Abuela and Mirabel towards the end of the movie happens in a multi-colored river. Although it seems more like a visual element of the movie, the fact is that such a place actually exists in Colombia. It is called Caño Cristales, and it is one of the most beautiful places in the country. It is located in the Department of Meta, inside a remote national park. Although it can be visited, a special permit is needed, and only a few people are allowed to visit each year.
Each magical member of the Madrigal family has a recurring symbol on their clothes that represent their gifts. Julieta's apron has images of plants and in the pockets, hands holding plants, representing her healing powers through her recipes. Pepa wears sun-shaped earrings and her dress has many suns on it, symbolizing her weather-related powers. Bruno has hourglasses on his poncho, mirroring his ability to see through "the sands of time". Isabela's dress is covered in flowers, directly tying to her plant powers. Luisa's skirt has free weights on the bottom, an obvious allusion to her super strength. Dolores's clothes are covered with sound waves, a clear reflection of her super hearing. Camilo's poncho has chameleons on it, alluding to both his name and his shape-shifting ability. Antonio's vest has animals sewn onto it, echoing his ability to understand and communicate with animals. Mirabel is shown with a decorative pink butterfly sewed on her right shoulder, a symbol of the house or family.
In 2018, directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush, along with Lin-Manuel Miranda and other key members of the production, undertook an extensive trip to Colombia to immerse themselves in the culture. They met with artisans, chefs and architects, as well as visiting the major cities of Bogota and Cartagena. However, they were particularly inspired by the small town of Barichara. Indeed, the tourist guide that showed them around, Alejandra Espinosa Uribe, was hired as a technical consultant. She also inspired the look of Mirabel with her curly hair and oversized glasses.
Bruno was originally named Oscar, but his name was changed to better fit the song lyrics, "We don't talk about Bruno-no-no-no-no." Additionally, there was a legal snag over a number of real life Oscar Madrigals that led the filmmakers to change it.
"Mirabel: [climbing the stairs in Bruno's room and getting increasingly exhausted] Welcome to the family Madrigal. There's so many stairs in the casa Madrigal. You think there would be another way to get so high 'cause we're magic, but no. Magical. How many stairs fit in here? Bruno, your room is the worst!"
"Town Kid: Maybe your gift is being in denial."
