STORY

Story
Yul Brynner plays political leader Sharif who is sprung from a police van on his way to a firing squad by young loyalists led by Sal Mineo. Yul and the other prisoners kidnap an ambulance and head into the Arabian desert with the police in hot pursuit. All the performances are magnificent: Sal Mineo showing his acting talents, Jack Warden in a wiseguy performance as an employee of Zahrain oil who was involved in embezzlement, Anthony Caruso as a slimy psychotic and the underrated Madlyn Rhue as a nurse who becomes emotionally involved in the proceedings.

Trivia

Sal Mineo had spent three years on the Broadway stage with Yul Brynner doing The King and I".

This was originally intended as a starring vehicle for Clark Gable, and the first draft of the screenplay was written with him in mind in 1959 by Dudley Nichols; whether or not Nichols had finished his work by the time of his own death in January of 1960 is not known. The project was put on hold after Gable died later in 1960, while it was in development. Edward Dmytryk would have directed.

Hal Blaine, the drummer, worked as a bit actor, stand-in and occasional stunt man for Sal Mineo in this film, according to a July 13, 2005 interview of Mr. Blaine available on YouTube.
