The film is an engrossing melodrama with a terrific young ensemble that delivers superb performances. The film takes an accessible approach to current subjects, albeit with an insignificant lack of depth, tackling many social issues inherent in the transgender experience, such as peer acceptance, parental issues, and the fear of discrimination-driven violence. However, the film's use of the "fanfic" gimmick, although bordering on extremely charming, prevents a more thorough investigation of these emotional issues. Nonetheless, it is an optimistic and cheerful story, which adds to its charm and appeal.
