The 'haunted hotel' in the film is based off the Hotel Cecil in Downtown Los Angeles
The fictional serial killer mentioned in the film was based on real serial killer Richard Ramirez a.k.a. The Night Stalker who lived at the Hotel Cecil during his 1985 crime spree in Los Angeles.
International serial killer Jack Unterweger also lived at the Hotel Cecil in 1991.
The girl in the elevator story was based on Elisa Lam, whose body was found in the Hotel Cecil's rooftop water tank in February 2013. Actual footage of her in the elevator is shown in this film. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning with bipolar disorder as a contributing factor.
As the couple pass Iowa, they go to a biker bar and resturant. It's the well known "Cooks Corner" in Santiago Canyon off El Toro Rd in Trabuco Canyon, CA.
